An amazing experience! I came to New York on a work conference. I brought my family because I get home sick without them. I was trying to figure out what could they do that they loved while I was at work! My family are sneakerheads! So this was the perfect experience. They were able to customize their own shoes. I brought new Air Force ones for them and they took it to the event to customize. My preteen went too. He had an amazing time. The instructor was amazing. A great teacher. He was patient, helpful, clear, and reassuring. We stayed in NYC for a week and of course did all the touristy things. However, this was the highlight of the trip, most enjoyed, and most memorable activity. It a must do activity. I highly recommend! Suggestion: - Bring the show you want to custom design. Ex : white Air Force one is a nice base canvas - Arrive early bc of the New York Traffic - Have an ideal of the colors that you would like to use, pattern, design etc that you are going for - Have so much fun

This class is a cool concept in theory, but there are some serious considerations to take before booking, and some improvements that could be made on SRGN Academy’s end. #1: DO NOT take the class if you’re a perfectionist, have a concept that feels time consuming, or if have no idea what you want your custom sneaker to look like. During the class, we were continuously reminded how little time we had left to create our shoes, and how we wouldn’t be able to include certain features because we would run out of time. The class is advertised as “3 hours” but what they don’t tell you when you sign up is that you have 30 minutes of “prep” time (scrubbing your shoes with acetone, removing your laces, picking out your materials) and then at the end, you need to hand in your shoe 30-45 mins in advance to dry + add the gloss. The 2 hours of design time is barely enough to just paint parts of your shoes with precision, considering you’ll need 3-4 coats. This pressure did not foster a fun environment, instead it was a rather stressful one. #2: A helpful tip that SGRN Academy fails to provide ahead of time, including the timing note above, is what is actually available to you in the class. Unless you take the time to travel to the actual store or reach out via phone/email, you won’t have any idea what you’ll have available at your fingertips until you walk in the door and the clock starts ticking. This includes: paint colors, marker colors, laces colors, suede material colors, jewels etc. and accounting for any material that triggers an additional fee. #3: Lack of guidance | After coming in with a few ideas for my sneakers, I had 30 minutes or less to explore the shop to bring my vision to life. I wanted to add some “texture” and use the pebble suede samples to glue a new swoosh onto the existing swoosh. Brian advised this hardly ever looks good when people try to achieve this in the customization classes. The snake skin samples they had were a hefty extra charge per patch. So I asked, “my only option is to just paint it then?”, and he replied yes. Despite the fact that he advised against glueing a patch over my existing swoosh, I did it anyway to achieve a “custom” look, as I had seen many examples online from previous customers taking this approach. It ended up looking fine. If I wanted to only paint my shoe and add some gloss to it, I could have done that at home for less than $200. Overall, my partner and I were content with our shoes but it was a stressful experience with Brian rushing the process. Rather than fostering a fun/creative environment, he continuously reminded of us what we couldn’t do due to time restraints. I understand setting timing parameters so customers don’t take advantage and spend 5 hours using countless materials on their sneakers, but at least set the customer up for success and set the expectations ahead of their arrival. I spent $400 on this class for my partner and I as a gift, not including the pair of air forces we had to purchase separately ($230). In my opinion, $630 is absolutely not worth this experience unless you have extra pocket change you’re dying to get rid of. If you REALLY want to make a well crafted pair of custom sneakers, watch a few TikToks and buy the materials yourself.

Took my kids here today in NYC and Brian was amazing! The kids loved the experience and really enjoyed the instruction and assistance that Brian provided. What a wonderful early Christmas present for my kids. I highly recommend this if you can make it happen!!

I feel like I wasted alot of money with this workshop as we didn't even get to finish our shoe. Brian was nice but hovered waaaaay too much and was constantly rushing and counting down. He also asked me to help my partner take the swoosh off his sneakers which ate up 45 mins of my sneaker time. I feel like he should've assisted here as we were the only 2 in this class and he was sitting there on his phone. I spent $400 on this workshop not including the price we had to pay for our sneakers separately and we hate them. He was rushing us so much I stenciled drips evenly on both my shoes and he took one to dry before I even said it was done and erased my stencil so I had to free hand the best I could and it came out so bad. We traveled from Boston for my partners 30th birthday specifically for this workshop and were super disappointed.

I highly recommend doing the 3 hour sneaker customization workshop! My partner and I did the weekend session with Brian and we had the best time. I was a bit worried that this activity would be better suited to kids but after taking the class, I really think sneakerheads of all ages (or anyone who likes crafting) would enjoy this class. Brian’s passion for sneakers and design skills made up for all the artistic talent we lacked! With his guidance, we were able to design and create two pairs of entirely unique and beautiful sneakers that we will treasure forever! Tip: move quickly with the painting and use the markers as they’re faster and more precise. If you want to avoid the marker “streaks”, the key is to get a thin base layer on fast, dry the paint (they have heat guns that will accelerate the drying), and then go in with extra coats until the marker lines are completely gone and you get an even coat of paint. As long as you keep the layers of paint thin, they will dry up and be ready for the next coat by the time you’ve finished your other shoe. The majority of the workshop will be dedicated to painting so to maximize the amount of time you have to explore other customization options (laces, rhinestones, leather add-ons, etc.), I’d recommend coming in with an idea of the colours you want to paint on your shoe. Three hours passes by quickly here. We took a while to pick out our colours and we are slow painters so we were able to JUST finish our sneakers (and that was with some help from Brian himself). If you’re not a great crafter/colour-er, go for the cartoon or paint splatter style. It looks amazing and is an extremely forgiving design - there is almost no chance you’ll ruin this style. Hope you enjoy!
